Conversion architecture

Start with the complete input envelope, not the nominal supply. Buck, boost and buck-boost architectures answer different requirements. Isolation and energy-flow direction must be established before selecting devices.

  • Input transients and undervoltage behavior
  • Switching losses, magnetics and thermal paths
  • Control-loop response and layout-sensitive EMI

Define the operating envelope

Capture supply limits, load profiles, environment and fault requirements before committing to a device or topology. For automotive and industrial systems, the nominal bus voltage is only one part of that specification.

  • Document minimum, maximum and transient input conditions
  • Separate continuous load, peak demand and startup inrush
  • Set measurable requirements for ripple, temperature and fault recovery

From architecture to review

Use the architecture to identify component stresses, layout-sensitive current paths and validation priorities. A design review should make assumptions explicit and distinguish analysis from measured evidence.

  • Review device limits against the whole operating envelope
  • Identify thermal and EMI risks before board layout
  • Agree test conditions and acceptance criteria before evaluation
